Minions feels right at home in the summer blockbuster season. As you can see in the newly released trailer above, the animated feature has got plenty of the characteristics we expect from movies hitting this time of year.
Not only is the sequel a spin-off, launching from the Steve Carell-voiced Despicable Me series, it’s also an origin story, à la Fantastic Four. It has dinosaurs like Jurassic World. It has a heist plot to rivalAnt-Man. It’s got G-strings straight outta Magic Mike 2. And of course it’s got a flashy villain — like half of the movies released this summer.
The film reveals the various rogues the gibberish-speaking little guys have served over the years before introducing a super-baddie that might just rival Gru (Carell): Sandra Bullock’s Scarlet Overkill, billed as the “first-ever female super-villain.” Hijinks ensue, including one thing no other movie offers this summer: romance with fire hydrants.
Minions opens July 10.
